Counselling & Psychotherapy

How does it work?

Starting therapy and making an appointment to see a registered psychologist is simple. If this is your first time, you will also be provided with a free 15-minute consultation to make sure we’re a good fit.

  • Where helpful, an optional 10–15 minute consultation may be offered to assess fit before booking an initial session. You will also be given the opportunity to ask questions.

    If you have a valid mental health treatment plan from your GP, this will also reduce the gap fee you pay.

  • Your psychologist will contact you to arrange the initial assessment. The session clarifies your concerns, relevant history, and the changes you would like to make. You will identify priorities and agree on the direction of therapy.

    The first appointment can feel unsettling, but this is normal. Your psychologist will aim to make the session as comfortable and structured as possible.

    Each session is tailored to you, with a structured approach suited to the concerns you are presenting with.

  • Therapy then shifts to targeted intervention guided by a precise formulation. Interventions are selected for their evidence base and direct relevance to the maintaining processes in your presentation, such as threat-focused thinking or mood-driven behaviours. Sessions remain structured and collaborative, with attention on measurable change in symptoms and day-to-day functioning.

    According to research, weekly or fortnightly sessions produce the strongest evidence-based outcomes. Once stable or in remission, some clients shift to less frequent follow-up appointments. Total duration varies by presentation, but the intention is to target and complete defined treatment goals within the first ten sessions.
